Writing a killer Instagram bio will make you more relatable to your target audience and increase your followers - and your sales!
Did you know - it takes the average person less than ONE SECOND to decide if they're going to follow you on Instagram? No matter what your mama tells you about not judging a book by its cover, we all do it - and if your profile isn't up to par, it could cost you business!
There are several things to focus on for a stellar Instagram profile. If you want to boost your followers, increase your engagement and grow your business, you're in the right place. Let's update your profile and optimize your account!
1 - A searchable, easy-to-find name.
Your profile should include both your brand/business name and your own name. People want to know who they’re interacting with! It also makes it easier if someone wants to contact you (who really wants an email addressed to “hey you” ??), or when they want to rave about how amazing you are ;).
Your username should be your business name. This makes it easiest for people to find you in a search. For those of you who are self-branded (like I am), just use your own name.
But what if my handle/business name/etc is taken?
Now in a perfect world, this will have been something you researched BEFORE naming your brand or business. But things happen - maybe your business started before Instagram was a thing, or you’re just learning to use Instagram, or (for the self-branded people out there) your parents weren’t the first ones to love how the name Kimberly Anne sounds. There are ways to get around this!
The best way to combat this is to add some sort of character. Instagram allows the use of numbers, periods and underscores in addition to letters. Try not to make it too cryptic (@al3xandra_fro3s3_ is nearly impossible to guess or even read) and stay on brand. For example, if @sweetweddingdecor is taken, try @sweet_weddingdecor or @sweetweddingdecor_.
2 - A fun, informative bio
Your bio is where your potential followers get to know who you are. It's a great way to introduce yourself to your audience and let them know what you're all about! The main points you need to cover are:
1) Who you are & what you do. Are you a food blogger, wedding photographer, gluten-free cupcake bakery owner?
2) What do you provide for your audience? (Keto recipes, Instagram tips, fashion advice, pictures of adorable puppies)
3) A Call-To-Action (CTA). Give your followers something to do - whether that's signing up for your email list, set up a coffee date, or access your free resources.
3 - Your beautiful face
Unless you're a super recognizable brand (think GAP or Target), your profile photo should be a picture of YOU. People like to connect with other humans! If you can, use a photo that fits with your brand, is clear, and has a clean background. Headshots are great for this!
4 - Your Website
Tell your audience where to find you! You only have one link, so use it wisely. There are a few popular ways to make the most of this link - I personally use linktr.ee, but there are other services like linkin.bio or you can design your own landing page on your website.
5 - Contact Options
This option is only available for business profiles - and it's one reason I highly recommend making the switch if you haven't already!
There are 3 different types of contact buttons available: email, call, or directions. Depending on your business type, you can use one or all of the options - it's up to you! This is a great way to connect with your followers off of Instagram.
Now that you know the 5 key areas to focus on, go on and give your Instagram account a makeover. Let's start growing that follower count!
